Thank you Jonathon Larson
So "RENT" came out on DVD this week and as soon as I could leave my office, it was in my hands.
There was this 90 minute documentary on the life of RENT's creator, Jonathon Larson. This guy was a life force...here he is the creator and composer of one of the most definative Broadway musicals ever and there were SO MANY failures on the way! I didn't know that he had written nearly a dozen other musicals that never left the page. The last one before RENT took him 7 years to write and it never saw full production! When someone finally saw potential in RENT, it took another 15 years to bring it to production! Even more tragic, after the first full dress rehearsal and the night before the debut performance, Jonathon's heart gave out and he died before seeing the first performance off-broadway...and it wasn't like he ever got to live the reputation that followed. He was in a crappy little apartment working in a diner all the way up to then! He had just quit the diner before he died to become a full-time composer! I watched videos of him on his last day as a waiter and he was so excited about the years ahead. But somehow, he never got to see his show.
It gives me hope to know his story. Makes my life seem kind of small. I've written so many songs and had so many ideas. Many bands I've worked with have evaporated, but I know eventually my finest hour will come.
It's a strange trade...Jonathon Larson never got to live the fame and impact his story had, but his songs and this show will be in history forever. And just like the child that broke the silence after that debut performance of RENT, as I go to bed I say, "Thank you Jonathon Larson."
